‘Purple Girls’ – Qezz Gill

Learning from Masterclasses

Qezz Gill

Qezz Gill is a 22-year-old, Pakistani filmmaker and photographer. She is presently a content creator and photojournalist at RIFE Magazine. Her job role involves using her writing, photography and creative skills to actively create new visual content for the RIFE magazine.

Qezz’s main passion is photography, but when she started working as a content creator for the magazine, she had to develop new writing and public speaking skills. Throughout her career, she has shot images for the front cover of Bristol 24/7 and photographed the Marc Quin Girls who played an active role during the Black Lives Matter Movement in Bristol. She is notably known for her platform called the Purple Girls Collective, inspired by her short film ‘Purple Girls’. A lot of her work focuses on women’s empowerment as women are some of her greatest inspiration. For example, her intention for ‘Purple Girls’ was to appreciate women. Hence, the video content for the short film, consisted of footage of her and her closest friends.

From her masterclass, I learnt the importance of flexibility within the industry. It’s essential to be willing to adjust to new roles, even if they push you outside your comfort zone. Qezz showed us how embracing new skills like public speaking and writing has benefited her career by allowing her to take on greater responsibility within RIFE Magazine. She introduced the idea of working for a magazine as this is something I had never considered before. Photography is also a passion of mine. Qezz helped me understand how I can build on this passion through alternative ways. For example, through platforms like RIFE Magazine, which exists to give voices to young community members who might struggle to be heard otherwise.
