Masterclass speaker: Varun Raman

Job role: Writer/ director for drama and film

Progression route: Started a studio radio show with friends at university and then Wrote a radio play while also making short films with his friends at university. Did a film and writing course. He worked with a cinematographer and then began making bigger films. He wrote a film that went on to feature in Fantasia film festival. he now is working on multiple feature film scripts etc.

What I’ve learnt:

• films and getting into the industry can take time- be patient
• don’t be afraid to get your work out by emailing people etc that you like
• find a mentor who will support you
• Film is a business as well as an art
• The best ideas come when you let yourself get bored
• use music and playlists to help you

Progression routes I’m now thinking of:

• Radio
• University
• Make your own opportunities, things don’t come easy
