working practices and legislation in the film industry

4.1 Health and safety practice

A risk assessment is important in order to keep all crew and participants safe.  It allows you to plan ahead, hopefully foreseeing possible incidents that could occur and finding ways to cope/ deal with them if they arise.  Being able to prevent incidents during the shoot, such as taping wires or managing equipment effectively promotes a safer environment, especially due to the fast-paced nature while filming.

4.2 Explain why copyright is important in the film industry

Copyright is a law that allows creators to protect their work from plagiarism, preventing their products being used without their consent or unlawfully, giving creators control over what they have made.  IP or Intellectual Property is any form of original creation, such as an invention or concept that has been thought up by the human mind.  This can often create issues due to it being intangible, and is a lot harder to regulate compared to a piece of film or art.  Without copyright, people could use unoriginal work and brand it as their own, taking credit from another’s work by claiming it as their own, profiting of someone else.

There are a large number of things that are covered under the copyright law, such as Music, books, machinery, films, artwork and choreography.  If copyrighted material is included in our film, it will not be able to be legally distributed, and can lead to the film being removed from all platforms.  Infringing copyright can also lead to a number of fines from companies who own the rights to specific material used, but i is also possible to pay for copyrighted products to be used alongside your own work.

The simplest way to avoid copyright in film is to create all your own music, footage and audio, as that way you can guarantee all work is your own.  It is important that if you are unsure if something may lead to copyrighted content, that you reach out and ask for permission.  It is much easier to do this before publication, so that you don’t have to remove content and then re-upload it.

Within our own film, we have been given permission from BBC points west to use footage from the royal visit to the gym legally, despite it not being filmed by us.  This will provide visuals when Iestyn mentions the visit, and will make our film more professional.  Another aspect of our film that we need to consider is music, as all boxing activities take place with music throughout.  At points we were able to turn the music completely down to guarantee nothing can be heard, but a number of shots still include music over the top.  This will be something to consider for the edit as if we are unable to remove this, the shots won’t be able to be used.
