Skills development

1.1 Develop your current knowledge, understanding and skills

– My current knowledge and understanding is that I’ve always been a ‘watcher’ of films so I focus a lot how the characters are dressed and how their costumes illustrates their personalities.

– The main specific areas I’m keen in film making is in the art department, but I’d love to learn more from all other aspects in the film making to expand my knowledge.

– The kind of role I see myself in doing is in the art department, costume making + make-up. I also would love to be part of giving ideas about filming making within the film

-I am hoping that in this course I will gain a difference for me, because it will help me to get a clear idea of how the fashion world gets involve in the Film world, and It would help me to make a choice if I want to be a costume designer in the film world. I’ve always loved watching films since I was a child and I have always had a strong connection that made me feel like I’m part of the movie.

-I’d like to continue studying in the fashion world and in the process of that i’d like to see what kind of different possibilities i could use it with in different parts of industries like in film world. I always had a dream to be part of or being involved of a film that I’ve helped to make it happen, and to that I’d see myself in where helping making costumes to brighten the characters personality.

1.2 Take a role in the production of a short film

  • My main production role is being the costume designer in the art department.
  • My role as a costume designer was to have an understanding of the characters personalities and how to illustrates them into clothing. By that I’ve had help in selecting different types of clothing resembling to the 80s and in which dressing up the characters. I’ve also have done research in the process of finding out what kind of 80s look we wanted.
  • For a costume designer the qualities and skills you need to have are always to be organised, always on time, always prepared, and everything has done before the deadline. These qualities an skills are very important and definitely in this role department because no mistakes cant be done during or towards the shooting day of the film. These are the key qualities they’re looked for in the film industry.
  • For a costume designer, their role is also to always make sure that everything around in set is how it should be and on schedule to make sure it won’t affect on other departments so no one should be delayed. During set they’ll have to maintain profesional at all times because there won’t be any time to lose time and have to maintain focus so they wont waste time and money on set. Communication and the processes on-set is also very important because nothing can get screw up during set so everything needs to be double checked and cleared for instructions.
  • For a costume designer, the kind of equipment and documents they need to carry out in this role is to have always their researched done for their assignment of the characters as clothed personalities, and it’s good to have back up costumes if something have gone wrong. They need to be aware of the budget to make sure they have enough for everything. They need to know the risk assessment. They need to make sure they have a copy of the script and the schedule of shooting.

1.3 Gain feedback on how you performed your role

1.4 Review your technical skills and use of equipment

  • My production roles I’ve done, which is Costume Designer, Make-up Designer and part played Actress (in the advert scene). I think I’ve done okay job in all areas, firstly I have been organising the costumes for all characters and for different scenes, I have also been doing the party people make-up with some help from Peggy and Andrea on shooting day with a short amount of time for to do all.
  • I think my strength were that I was able to be attentive to all details and able to get things on time. Another strength is that I’m always on time and I’m quite well organised. However, I find challenging in being calm just before the shoot when I need to make sure that all characters are ready before shoot. Another challenge I faced was that I was really nervous acting to camera.
  • My understanding of how a film is put together has developed loads through following the film production process. I have realised how long it takes to shoot each scene.  My skills in costume and make up developed exponentially, I learnt how to organise costumes, how to research and create a mood board for film and I also advanced my skills in make up.
  • I would like to improve my understanding and skills in make up on how to work with different face shapes – I hadn’t realised how different everyone’s eyes are!
  • I would like to develop my skills in costume for film, especially in terms of designing and making costume working with an art director and thinking about how costume reflects character.
