2.2 Describe a range of key job roles and responsibilities in the film industry

Director works closely with producer and writers, creating and perfecting original ideas into finished films or programmes. They have to make very precise preparations in order to ensure the success of the shoot. They must have a clear vision of the project and what is needed to achieve it, alongside a strict schedule within the timeframe and budget. They oversee all areas of film set, both technical and creative, and meet with Directors/heads of departments to ensure the smooth-running of shoot.

Camera Director works to the Directors script, they frame shots and perform camera moves with speed and precision. They have expert working knowledge of cameras, lenses, equipment and accessories. They need good hand-eye coordination and good eyesight and to have strong leadership skills because they have to coordinate their teams: camera operators, grips, gaffers, etc. Camera Director also works closely with the Production Designer to create visuals.

Costume designer reads the script and analyses the characters to help imagine the costumes. Costume Supervisor is responsible for finding, creating or hiring costumes for every character. They must ensure that characters are comfortable and help actors feel emotionally connected to character through their costume. They work closely with Production Designer and follows the Director’s brief. Oversees standby costume and make-up artists.

The Production Designer is responsible for the art department which is often the biggest department on set. It’s one of the most creative departments in the industry as they create whole imaginary worlds from scratch in great detail. The Production Designer manages art directors, set decorators, concept artists, researchers, production buyers, graphic designers, draughtsmen and runners. The Production Designer have to work closely with the Director to realise their vision, they will read the screenplay and imagine the visuals that will bring the story to life. They’ll work closely with the Director of photography to determine a colour palette and style for the film. They also work closely with costume and make-up.
