Skills Development

1.1 Develop your current knowledge, understanding and skills

I’ve always loved watching films in my spare time and I feel I have a relatively strong understanding of film. I find it interesting how directors can use different techniques to tell and story and manipulate the audience in a certain way and how different directors have different styles of film making. I love watching all types of films especially thrillers and dramas. I have made a couple of films as part of my studies, One which was part of my media studies A level coursework which was a mockumentary report about fake news and drugs. Another film I made was part of my art foundation portfolio which is a short film bout my journeys skateboarding. I’ve had some work experience working as a runner on a set at the university of Gloucester.

My main areas of interest in film making are directing or working behind a camera as I’ve had some experience in these areas. I would also like to try out some new skills and areas I haven’t tried before. I can see myself taking a role as a director as I’ve had experience writing scripts and directing before.

I hope to gain insight into the film industry and experience in making a short documentary as I’ve always had an interest in the media and how films are made. I hope to gain film making skills so I can go away and improve and make more films.

I would like to improve my skills by learning more camera and filming techniques so i can improve my filming and be more confident in film making. I would also like to learn new skills that go into making a film and also learn how documentaries are made.

I plan on either next year or the year after on going to study at university, I’m looking at doing a media based course so I feel this course will really help me in my future and help me decide exactly what I want to study.

1.2 Take a role in the production of a short film

1.3 Gain feedback on how you performed your role

1.4 Review your technical skills and use of equipment

I do agree with the feedback my peers gave me, I feel it was all very accurate as we all worked well taking our roles as a team. I think I carried out my role well as I learnt a lot of new skills and worked well as part of the camera team. I feel like my strengths were that I had good communication with my team through the shooting days, and my challenges was some of the camera framing and filming as I haven’t done much before. I feel a lot of my skills have developed for example learning what goes into making a film and the roles that need to be carried out. As well as learning specific camera skills and using camera equipment. I have learnt about framing as some of the footage that we could’ve used was framed badly and couldn’t be used so I learnt about that. My knowledge has developed from not knowing much at all about film production to feeling comfortable on a set and with the certain roles that need to be carried out. I have also learnt a lot about the specific equipment such as how different camera lens’ can be used for different shots and how the sound equipment works. I would like to develop my skills further in film production by trying to get more work in the industry and studying a film related degree at university.

Otis, this is a good explanation of your current interests and skills in film and how you would like to develop these through the Academy. I look forward to seeing how your documentary develops. You have achieved this criteria towards showing your skills development. It would be great if you could add examples of some of your work – either film links and/or photographs. Thanks, Bex.

    Hi Otis,
Its really good to read how you feel your film skills and knowledge developed so much through your role in the ‘Proud to Be’ documentary. You were a great part of a great team! Along with your diary, you have evidenced this section to a good standard and have therefore achieved this learning outcome – 1 develop technical skills to meet film production requirements. well done
