Skills Development

1.1 Develop your current knowledge, understanding and skills

I have been making short films, Funny videos and Music videos for YouTube since I was 11.

I have been watching movies my whole life, but in the last couple of years, I have sparked a passion for films. My Favourite film is “Swiss army man” I love this movie, it is impossible to compare this film with anything else because it’s extremely original. The message in the movie is wonderful, its Beautifully Edited and the soundtrack is just something out of this world. A good film makes you realize things that you couldn’t just learn through words.  I just love the fact that a combination of visual storytelling, dialog, and music can make someone feel emotions. It’s because of YouTube that I found my Passion for Filmmaking, I want to make Films that have an impact on the Audiences, I want to tell stories.

In year 10 at school, I had work experience with an award-winning film company Equine Productions. During the week of work experience, I got to experience what it’s like working in the film industry. I loved every second of that week and I realized: this is what I want to do with my life. I just love making films because I can’t imagine a better feeling than changing someone’s life for the better, even if it’s a little bit -Through my films. I just love collaborating with passionate people that get together and make something that could possibly make other people happy.

A role I see myself in on this film course would probably be somewhere in post-production, I have a lot of experience with video editing and I really enjoy Editing. From working on the BFI Film course, I hope to expand my skills in filmmaking. It would be a great qualification to have because it might help me get a job later in life. I would like to learn how to use industry-standard Film kit. Learn more about camera angles and why it can create meanings. I would like to expand my knowledge on the importance of sound. I am currently studying Film & Media production at City of Bristol college not sure exactly what I want to do after college. Either go to University to study film or get a Job. By working in a professional environment and learning how to overcome the problems that arise during the production.

1.2 Take a role in the production of a short film

What is your production role?

I am currently part of the Art department in the production design team, we are responsible for creating the artistic style of the film. Being in this role means we have control over how parts of the film will look, for example, we are responsible for:

  • Costumes & Makeup
  • sets
  • Props
  • Graphics
  • Animation

Being in this role means we have to work closely with the director and make sure the props and costumes we make fit with the style and theme of the film. we have to make sure that we stick to deadlines because otherwise the production would be delayed if we don’t have the props and costumes ready.

What do you have to do to carry out this role?

To carry out my role successfully I will need to be good at working in a team since we can’t do everything on our own, we will need to do focus groups together with lots of people to get ideas for the style of the film. we need to be good at communicating our ideas across to each other. we need to recognize each other’s skills and weaknesses so we can be assigned, Pacific jobs that we are better at and will be able to do effectively.

What do you do in the production?

The specific jobs I was responsible for doing are:

  • Building the Incubus helmet (prop)
  • Animating the green screen elements of the film
  • making the graphics for the Dreamland chatroom
  • Being script supervisor for a day

What equipment and planning documents do you need to carry out this role?

I had to use lots of different tools and materials when actually making and assembling the incubus like: glue gun, spray paint, scissors, electrical drill……

In production, when I had to be temporary script supervisor I had to time each individual scene, record the time code I had a script on me so I can look out for continuity when filming. I had to work close to the director and write down a comment from her after each scene. when working on the animation i used Blender to model texture and animate the 80s neon grid for the green screen.

1.3 Gain feedback on how you performed your role

1.4 Review your technical skills and use of equipment

Do you agree with the feedback?

I agree with my feedback because it highlighted my strengths and weaknesses, The feedback was honest and mentioned all the things I did, It mentioned the challenges I had to face and how I overcame those challenges.

How well do you think you carried out your role in production?

I believe that I was successful at carrying out my role because I tried my best and always gave 100% when completing each task I was set. I believe I work well with the group and contributed as much as I could come up with ideas. I worked effectively with the Animation and the final thing looks very good and professional, The Incubus helmet that me and Alec made also looked very nice at the end and we face lots of problems when building it.

What were your strengths and what were your challenges?

I believe I was good at problem-solving and face a lot of challenges that I overcame. For example, I had rendering problems with the animation so I had to work with what was already animated and make it look like the original in Final cut. Another challenge is that I had to take on the role of script supervisor for a day, this was challenging because I had to quickly learn what the role required.

In what ways did your technical filmmaking skills develop over the course of film production?

I had to learn a lot when I was animating the VFX, there was a lot I didn’t know beforehand like how to make the mountain in the background glow and how to duplicate the grid, I had to learn these things by my self from youtube.

Reviewing your footage what have you learnt?

I learn that a big part of Filmmaking involves solving problems because things never run smoothly. I learned that time management is very important and we wouldn’t have achieved what we have now if we didn’t have good timekeeping.

How far has your knowledge and understanding of film production developed over the Academy?

I learned that Film making is a very collaborative job and we need to rely on each other if we want to create a good production, Film making brings people together on set because we learn about each other strengths and weaknesses and help each other as we go along.
