Why does copyright law exist?

Copyright law exists to enable the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual effort, meaning copyright essentially protects the creators work from being copied or stolen.

Anything from creative media to products, copyrights can range to things like:

  • music
  • photography
  • books
  • scripts
  • artwork
  • schematics

What might happen if you were to use copyright material in your film?

To use copyrighted material you’d need to pay a royalty fee, however, if you attempt to use copyrighted material in a production without permission then you could face being sued and worst case scenario could face prison time.

How can you make sure not to infringe copyright and other IP law in your film?

You can do this by:

  • using original material
  • Use royalty free sources
  • crediting the original creator
  • paying a royalty fee
  • asking permission from the original creator

How was copyright law and other IP regulations affected your film production?

in order to avoid copyright law, we ended up avoiding using already created media by creating our own, this ranged from everything from our concepts to our music so we barely had to think about it.
