2.1 Explain the working culture of the film industry

What is it like working in the film industry?
The film industry is a very competitive Industry that is becoming more and more popular, since cameras now days are so cheap anyone can just pick up a camera and start making films. Its not a very stable industry of work, if your a freelance filmmaker sometimes you might be very busy and sometimes you will have no work at all. It’s a hard to say no to Job opportunities in film because you don’t know when you will be working again. Hours of work will be dependent on the jobs you are given sometimes you will working long hours but have very long breaks. Depending on the area of film making you might be travelling a lot to go to set, Its a high pressure job and you will need to have good time management skills-to keep up with the work. Everyone in the film industry has a different area they work in and if someone doesn’t do their job on time it can delay the entire production. There are a lot of good things about the industry for example you will always be working with passionate people that love what they do. you will be able to create content that will entertain an audience. Film makings an art form used to tell stories and she different cultures and experiences. It’s a way to communicate with the world.

What qualities do you need to work in the film industry?
You will need to have good communication skills because film making is a team job and to succeed you will need to share your ideas and be friendly with people. The best way to get into the film Industry is through networking and talking to people in the film industry sharing ideas and interests, so good communication skills can come in handy. Having experience in the film industry will help a lot because it shows you already know how to work professionally in the industry. Technical skills like (Camera skills, Audio recording skills, Editing, writing…) can come in handy because it shows you have useful skills that will make you standout.

What have you learned about the working culture of the industry from masterclasses and working on your own film production?

I learnt that it’s an industry that involves getting your self out there and taking every opportunity that comes at you. I learnt that its a friendly industry and networking is very important if you want to succeed. “its about who you know”. Alice says the best progression routes is by working her way up through film festivals and other events. Other opportunities such as BFI networking are also great ways to break into the industry.
