Skills Development

1.1 Develop your current knowledge, understanding and skills

I have always loved watching films, I work in a cinema which gives me the chance to view plenty of films that I can learn and draw inspiration from. But it was studying photography that opened my eyes to filmmaking. It sparked my interest in cinematography by looking at framing and colour and I started to make short films and videos for my final pieces. My Year 13 final piece was a 2 minute film titled ‘Unexpected Perspectives’ in which I experimented with a variety of cameras and unusual angles to create shots inspired by research into Hitchcock and films such as ‘Into the Void’. To better understand the practicalities of filmmaking last summer I took a work experience placement at The Doghouse, a post production facility in Bristol. During my time there I was able to gain insights into script writing, editing and the finishing process by talking to producers, directors and editors. I also sat in on various sessions including colour grading, commentary recording, online and offline editing.

I am very interested in directing and cinematography as I feel very drawn towards making the creative decisions for a film. I feel my photography studies have given me transferable skills I can apply to cinematography including techniques such as framing, lighting, depth of field ect. I would love to be on either the directing or camera team. Preferably cinematography as I would be so grateful to have the opportunity to work with cameras I haven’t worked with before and learn the proper technicalities from professionals. As well as learning how to work on a film in a team as I’ve only made small films as an individual up until now.

I hope to take from the BFI Film Academy an increase in skills and in confidence, to be able to consider myself a filmmaker and feel self assured going into projects afterwards. I am applying to study Anthropology and Visual Practice at university next year so would love the course to give me a boost to work to the best of my ability there. I also hope having this qualification and amazing experience aids me in pursuing a career in film post university.
