Roles in Film

2.2 Describe a range of key job roles and responsibilities in the film industry

Producer –

The producer holds the main responsibility for the production of the film from start to finish. They develop and finalise the initial ideas and organise and manage a team to create the film

Director –

Often in Documentary filmmaking the producer and director will be the same person. However, the role of the director is to manage the making of the film (primarily the shooting but will also oversee the editing process). Their job is to ‘direct’ the team as well as the subject being filmed.

Cinematographer –

The Cinematographer works with the cameras. The ‘DP’s (director of photography) job is to direct the camera men more technically than the film director can. The DP will be working with the director to produce the visual aspect of the film.

Sound –

The sound crew’s job is to record sound onset, as well as some roles covering sound in post such as recording voice overs and foley. The sound crew is made up of a production sound mixer, boom operator and sound assistants.

Editor –

An Editor works to bring the whole film together. They cut and clips, choosing the best shots and most relevant parts and also work with colour grading and music. There are roles for offline and online editors, who create rough and final cuts with guidance from the producer.

Well done Issy, this is a really clear summary of key roles on set. Your production diary will show practical knowledge of how a documentary crew works together and you will also explain the roles in film of some of our industry experts in your masterclass notes, in order to further evidence this criteria. Well done for keeping to deadline. Ses
