The Industry

2.1 Explain the working culture of the film industry

Film is a competitive industry to break into and work experience is needed-, network at every opportunity and work on student or local productions to develop your skills. The majority of filmmaking jobs are filled by freelance workers, so it’s important to make a name for yourself. While careers in film are incredibly rewarding, it’s worth bearing in mind that they come with a low level of job security as you’ll usually be hired on a film-by-film basis. Wages, working hours and locations vary, depending on the size of the production you’re working on and the funding behind it.

You need to be very sociable because 50% of the reason someone would get hired in film is their personality and their skills. Making a film is a team effort so therefore people have to be sociable, caring and organised. Creativity is key for working in film which will help in practical work.

Working in the film or TV industry can take you all over the world. It can be challenging at times in harsh environments but overall it allows people to travel and learn. Working as a freelancer can become quite stressful at times so therefore getting the right connects and not under selling yourself will help massively.

2.2 Describe a range of key job roles and responsibilities in the film industry

Art director is the person responsible for the look of a film’s sets, he or she is also responsible for their construction.

Either employed by a production company or working independently, producers plan and coordinate various aspects of film production, such as selecting the script, writing, directing, and editing; and arranging financing. Finally, the producer will oversee the marketing and distribution.

A film director controls a film’s artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay (or script) while guiding the technical crew and actors in the creation process of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design, and the creative aspects of filmmaking.

Actors express ideas and portray characters in theater, film, television, and other performing arts media. They also work at theme parks or other live events. They interpret a writer’s script to entertain or inform an audience.

Responsible for applying makeup and prosthetics to aesthetically enhance performers, individuals, entertainers, or for special events such as weddings or dates. Work independently or with a team. This is a very important element in making film.

2.3 Potential progression routes into the film industry and wider sector

I would love to enter the camera team or director of a film company.

I would possibly go to university to study film or perhaps do NFTS. Also i would like to work in a film production company and see how professionals work together.

I will always keep making youtube videos on my channel for fun and to practise editing. I would also like to work with other creators to produce a short film.
