Skills Development

1.1 Develop your current knowledge, understanding and skills

I have been watching films my whole life and I have always been amazed with the way directors are able to create a story which can interest so many people. It is only recently that I have taken an interest into the production which goes into a film. When I was younger, I enjoyed acting and I did shows on the stage but also did courses where I could learn about acting for camera. My first experience with learning about film was when I was in two music videos. One I created with a group of young performers over two weeks in the summer, the other was for an artist called Jay Brown. I first learned how to produce films when i did another course over a few months where I learned how to operate a boom mic and use camera angles to get the best shot possible.

My particular interests when filmmaking are in the production and sound. I enjoy creating and mixing  music in my spare time but I am looking to gain experience in the technical side of making a film. I would be interested in learning about recording sounds in a studio behind filmed action. My intention is to build up my skills during this course so that I can use them in later life to possibly follow a career in the film industry.

1.2 Take a role in the production of a short film

The equipment and documents needed to carry out this role include:

  • Canon 80D
  • Canon 7D
  • 4 batteries
  • SD cards
  • 24mm prime lens
  • 50mm prime lens
  • 24-70mm lens
  • rode camera microphones
  • tripods
  • stabiliser
  • projector
  • projector material
  • risk assessment
  • shot list
  • contributor release forms

Other resources that are needed include:

  • lighting equipment
  • props such as those used in domestic setting specified in shot list
  • sound equipment
  • clapper board

1.3 Gain feedback on how you performed your role

1.4 Review your technical skills and use of equipment

I think that over this whole process, I have learned a lot about how to work within a film crew and on set. I have also gained experience on what is needed to prepare for shooting a short documentary. I thought that the comments that I was given by my peers were very nice and i am grateful. I agree with the comments that they have given me because I think I am naturally a warm person and I have been able to really cooperate well with my group over the whole process. I think that in production, I successfully completed my role and I was organised with the work that I needed to do. My strengths were being able to work well in a team well and knowing what to do at the time with the equipment. I think that the thing I could’ve worked on is sharing more of my ideas about sound in the pre production stages. Over the coarse of the production, I developed a range of skills and learned many new things. One of the main things I thought I improved on is understanding the technology used in the sound production team.

Well done for completing your work for section 1 – Be able to develop technical skills to meet film production requirements.
This is a useful reflection and review of your skills development and how you have gained a technical understanding of filmmaking through the production process. I agree you were a calm and focused member of the team and your aptitude in using the sound equipment was excellent.
You have achieved this learning outcome to a good level.
