Skills development

1.1 Develop your current knowledge, understanding and skills

I am currently doing a creative media course at Boom Satsuma and have finished two units (photography and logo design) and at the moment are creating a documentary short,  I have always been interested in film/filmmaking and enjoy analysing the creative process and the film makers intentions.

Specifically I am mainly interested in the directing/producing side of things as I enjoy how a film comes together and being able to effectively create something I’m passionate in.

I want to be able to expand my knowledge on specific areas of film I am not so familiar with, such as sound and camera work, I think by learning these skills I will be better equipped to work in the industry. I also hope to gain more confidence through working in a professional environment and using real equipment.

My further plans would be to study film after collage before finding a job somewhere in the industry.

1.2 Take a role in the production of a short film

My production role is in sound where I work in using a boom mic, radio mics and a zoom recorder. On the shoot I take responsibility in micing the contributors, making sure the boom mic is not in shot and checking the sound levels, I also help in the edit with checking and editing the sound to make sure it is clear and synced with the visuals.

In carrying out my role I need to be prepared to set up the equipment quickly and efficiently, I also need to be able to be on time for the shoot and know how to use all the equipment (In case instead of holding the boom mic I am working on the zoom recorder / the other way round)

Equipment used includes; Boom Mic/boom mic pole, Zoom recorder, Radio mics (receiver and transmitter), headphones.

1.3 Gain feedback on how you performed your role

(Recording of feedback given by team)

1.4 Review your technical skills and use of equipment

I agree with my feedback as I thought I worked well within the team and managed to efficiently follow through with instructions, I also agree that I can improve my skills by communicating with the camera team about whether the boom is in shot.

I thought I carried out my role very well as I was able to easily switch between various sound equipment (Boom mic and zoom mixer) and use them both while filming.

My strengths were in being able to transfer my skills to different elements of sound recording and be able to communicate well with the people we were interviewing, I think my challenges in filming were making sure the boom mic wasn’t in shot as I sometimes had it in frame without realising.

Hi Darcy, this is a good discussion so far of your current interests and experience in film production. In order to achieve this criteria could you add more detail on your specific current film or film related skills (e.g camera work/photography) and upload some examples of your work, also please outline how you hope to develop your film knowledge and skills through the Academy. Thank you, Sarah

Hi Darcy this is great work on your role and along with shoot diary shows evidence of skills development and practical learning in creating your short documentary. You are up to date with what you need to achieve on this section so far. Well done.
