Role in Production

1.2 Take a role in the production of a short film

My role in this production is Directing, Camera work, and Editing.

As a director, it is my job to be in control of the story that we are trying to tell and to be a good leader and a good communicator with the rest of my team. In pre-production, I need to be very organised and need to play a key role in setting up the people that we will use, locations, and also storyboarding. I intend to be a good, professional director while also being someone that the rest of the team feels is their equal as I don’t like the idea of me taking over and completely controlling the production and therefore, making the rest of the team feel left out or ignored. I hope to be a good director through being on time and organised for our shoot days and always thinking two steps ahead and trying to foresee any issues we may have so that we can make sure they don’t happen.

In pre production, my main role included doing a pre-interview with our contributor which helped us plan the visuals for our main production as we knew the kind of things he’d be talking about and it gave us a better insight into his situation. I’m also a major contributor into the creative ideas and overall vision of the project. I have the responsibility of planning specific shots and have a major role communicating with the camera and sound teams.

In production one of my main roles is to be interacting with the contributor and remaining professional but approachable in my role as interviewer.

I need to make sure I keep in close contact with the rest of my group, and be professional and respectful to everyone in the group and their idea’s.

1.3 Gain feedback on how you performed your role

1.4 Review your technical skills and use of equipment

I agree with my feedback quite a lot- I think that they made some really good points about how I worked with my team and I’m glad they picked up on how hard I was trying to make everything fair and not be controlling. It was also very reassuring to hear that they thought I worked well with our contributor.

I think I carried out my role as director quite well, I think I did good job at directing people without feeling overbearing and controlling and I think that my contributions in the planning and pre-production part of the process were quite helpful and I feel I did a good job at working with the team, especially Jade and Jake, to help enact our creative vision well and in the necessary stylised ways. I think having the role of director was really useful to me as it helped me be able to have some sort of creative control over the piece and I really enjoyed working in a team with quite a leading role.

I think this piece didn’t stretch my technical strengths much which I thought was a bit disappointing but I do think I developed some directing strengths during this process, for example: working with a contributor and my communication skills within a group. I think being in a directing role really helped my teamwork skills as I normally prefer working alone. I think one main challenge of this project was organisation and planning, especially in terms of timing. Luckily having Jake as producer made my job way easier in these areas but it was still quite stressful.

I mainly learnt my technical skills through watching Sameer and Jade and most of what I learnt was theory or about types of cameras and lenses which I actually found really helpful and I’ve used lots of the information I’ve learnt in college projects. The main technical skills I actually completed were with setting up the camera and I did lots of work on focusing and also checking IOS levels and aperture etc.

I think I’d still like to further develop my technical skills especially with camera and I’d also like to take some time to focus on sound a bit more as that’s probably my weakest area. I’ve also taken an interest in music production due to this project as it really helped bring our piece together and it seems like a really fun and creative section that I’d like to explore

Hi Tia, this is great. Really good to see that you are considering the qualities needed to be a good director and how important team work is. You are also creative and have thought about the look and tone of the short film. Could you tell me more about your “vision” for the film and also add your mood board perhaps. Thanks!

Well done for completing your work for section 1 Be able to develop technical skills to meet film production requirements.
You have included useful reflection on your skills development and how you have gained a technical understanding of filmmaking through the production process. You have achieved this learning outcome to a good level.
