Working relationships

3.1 Teamwork

Teamwork is extremely important in film production as each individual has their own skills and qualities required for their job role which is relayed on to make the film. Main roles that work particularly close together firstly are the camera and sound team especially during moments like interviews as the sound operator must know where their limit for the boom is so that they don’t come into shot.

Working  Collectively as a team results in the production process being quicker and easier. Effectively communicating with one another is important and had we not done this, this could have resulted in a film that didn’t meet our expectations.

I was on camera and worked closely with sound to make sure we maintained a high quality film, and I worked closely with the producer to ensure I was getting the right angles and shots how it had been pre-planned for.

Bad teamwork will impact both the production and outcome of the film badly. This means people aren’t communicating effectively and results in expectations not being met, it can result in a waste of time, production being extended as more mistakes are likely to happen and overall a lower quality film. A minor example of bad communication is during out interview, one of the guys on sound hadn’t pressed record therefore we caught no audio on the boom but we had a back up mic on the camera. This is an example of how effective communication is important so that everyone knows what they are doing.

3.2 Qualities needed to work well with others

Tutor Observation

Ability to collaborate with others in the production team:

Sameer was a keen, focused and friendly member of his production team. He worked well with others, listening to their ideas and responding thoughtfully and contributing with good ideas at various stages of the production process.  Sameer worked with the camera team and collaborated well with Jade, keeping good communication throughout filming. He also took direction well and came up with some creative shot ideas.

Sameer had effective interactions with all the members of the production team. He was always courteous and acknowledged the contribution of others in a positive way. He asked questions when necessary and communicated well.

Using initiative:

Sameer showed initiative throughout with his pre-visualising of the documentary idea in pre-production and his execution of the camera work during the shoot days. Sameer filmed using the stabilizer, he hadn’t used this equipment before and it wasn’t simple and easy to use. But he stayed calm, tried different approaches and kept on trying. By the end of the 2nd day he got to grips with it and the resulting shots are excellent.

Timekeeping and Reliability:

Sameer was generally on time for sessions and on shoot days. He has now met work deadlines and has worked efficiently throughout the course. He has been a committed and reliable member of the team and has contributed with valuable input.

Safe Working:

Sameer observed safe working practice on shoot days. He attended the pre-shoot Health and Safety briefing, read and understood the Risk Assessment and wore appropriate clothing when filming outdoors. As part of the camera team he effectively observed safe working practice. He was focused and sensible during the more tricky shots, especially when using the stabilizer and walking on ice and also when filming in the pool.

Coped with the pressures of working in “on set” environment:

Sameer coped well in the “on set” environment of working on shoot days, always remaining cheerful, focused and happy to pitch in where required. He had a pleasant attitude throughout and was a calm presence in the group.

3.3 Working collaboratively on your film production

I feel I worked well with my team mates, we all supported one another and remained focused on the project to reach the outcome we had visualised and planned. Although we did lose time due to equipment issues, I and everyone remained professional on set and keen to get the task done. I feel I worked very well with my team and remained focused, professional and driven to get the outcome we had planned for.
