Working Relationships

3.1 Teamwork

Teamwork is important because on a film production, everyone is contributing to the final product and without one persons expertise or specialisation the production can fall apart or not fulfil its true potential.

From the way the crew worked together on set I realised that every part of the crew is vitally important. For example you have to make sure the sound and camera teams are working effectively, and effectively together. You need the first AD to move the schedule and make sure that camera and sound are working. etc. Basically, every element is important and if one element is lacking or someone is unreliable this effects the whole shoot.

I think we all got on really well as a crew which is really important as it needs to be fun and you need to help each other through the long day. I really felt that everyone supported each other and this made us an effective crew.

3.2 Qualities needed to work well with others

  • Good timekeeping

This involves not only being on time and punctual but making sure that you stick to deadlines. It also refers to the ability to allot your shooting time correctly and not spend too much time shooting one scene when you have limited time. This is something we struggled with especially as we had to shoot a total of 5 scenes in 2 days however we just about managed it and only ran overtime once.

  • Being reliable

On a film production this refers to giving 100% to whatever you are responsible for. It also refers to knowing what you have to do on set and what you are responsible for. On our production everyone had there roles and had practised them beforehand so we rarely ran into issues of people being unsure of what to do.

  • Teamwork

Teamwork encompasses lots of different qualities, but its best summarised by being your ability to contribute to a team, bringing your unique skills and talents whilst allowing everyone else to contribute theirs. On our production everyone worked very well together, and everyone contributed something to the final product.

  • Sharing ideas

This involves being a contributing member of the crew, but also having the ability to listen and be open to others suggestions but most importantly when working collaboratively is the ability to compromise. On our production we applied this very well especially in the script writing team and the production design teams which involved lots of people contributing there ideas.

  • Safe working

This involves understanding the risks that may face you or your crew whilst working on set and enforcing safe working practice. Creating a risk assessment is a very important aspect of this, something we did on our production.

3.3 Working collaboratively on your film production

Both of the teams that I was a part of (Writing team and Production design team) required a lot of teamwork. In the Production design team we where creating the look of the entire film and we all contributed our ideas to all the elements of production design including the sets, props, costumes, VFX and colour schemes.

One challenge we where faced in particular that sticks out to me was in bringing the Incubus device to life. First we had to decide what the device actually was. We knew that it recorder your dreams but from there it was up to us what it looked like. We eventually decided on making it a headset as that fit with the retro-80s-futurist look that we where going for. Alejandro Martin And Jack Mcgilvary drew up a couple of initial ideas, and from that I created a mood board of possible designs and design elements. Then I drew up a design based upon the initial drawings and the mood board. I then gave this to Alejandro and Jack who’s job it was to create the headset. We had some complications bringing my design to life so we had to compromise and change a couple of the elements whilst also adding some new features like the lights. Eventually what we came out with was a very good design that was the result of the input of the entire art department.

I think over this course I have really improved my ability to work I a team, however It has also highlighted places where I could improve when it comes to teamwork. One of theses is in my ability to compromise which was especially evident in the writing team. I often get too attached to ideas of mine and was not pleased when they are not used, however from doing this course I have learnt the importance of being able to drop ideas that might not work however attached to them I might be because many of the final ideas ended up being much better than ones I had come up with earlier in the process. Another area I could improve in is getting involved even if my knowledge is limited simply for the benefit of the team. I had little experience in making things so I left the building of the headset to Alejandro and Jack. I could have helped out more in this process and it would have meant the headset was built quicker.
