Working Relationships

3.1 Teamwork

Teamwork is essential in film production due to the huge number of jobs and the importance of each one. Team members need to communicate well amongst each other and with the director as well as making sure their focus is mostly on doing their own job perfectly to ensure everything runs smoothly.

If there isn’t good team work, such as lack of communication between the camera and sound teams you could end up without essential audio needed to go with some footage. Or if someone is focussed on what someone else is or should be doing, it means they are not putting all their attention into their role and mistakes can be made.

3.2 Qualities needed to work well with others

To ensure good timekeeping the producer needs to be keeping an eye on the clock whilst the team members ensure they’re as quick as they can be with equipment set up etc. I think this is the area our grou struggled with the most, but it wasn’t detrimental to any of our shooting and we now know how to improve on this.

All team members need to be reliable by being on time and always being there. Team members all need to be able to trust each other to be doing what they are doing correctly, which is why shoot schedules and team meetings before shooting are essential. Teamwork also follows the same guidelines, it’s important the team can communicate well with each other and all get on and maintain friendliness and professionalism, which I felt our group did well.

Sharing ideas is also essential to ensure the team works well together and to make sure the film is the best it can be, again to do this well good communication and respect and friendliness are key which our group was really good at.

Safe working is also really important and so needs to be discussed before shooting and a risk assessment needs to be written. This is a key role of the producers but the responsibility falls on all of the team to make sure they are working safely and keeping aware of the situation around them.

3.3 Working collaboratively on your film production

I feel all our crew worked really well together from pre production to shooting to post. We all had ideas to contribute and all listened really well to each other and took everything on board. In pre production I spoke a lot with the directors, like Una, about visual ideas.

In production I worked closely with the camera crew and me and Bo worked well together to use any spare time to get interesting cutaways as we hadn’t necessarily planned lots of these out or left much time for them but I felt we overcame this and did it really well.

I think having a more clear role on just one team could help work better in a crew in future so I’m just focussed on one task and not getting caught up with trying to add ideas everywhere.
