Production Diary

Production diary content

In the stages of pre production I helped my group come up with the Ideas to find clear direction to our documentary. Once we had found our contributor, we thought of some questions which we could ask him and i successfully contributed my ideas towards them.

Working on sound i was also often thinking about sound that could be used for the soundtrack or in the documentary. When the shoot day came I felt that I was prepared for what I needed to do because we had already used the equipment that I was using on the day in a masterclass.

As a group we were also prepared as we had used our equipment before and had created a plan and schedule of what we would be doing during our shoot days and when. My role on the shoot was the sound recordist which involved holding the boom mic and finding the levels of whatever we were recording including the wild track.

On each day we would begin the shoot by receiving our schedule for the day and after that we would have an idea of what time frame we had to film for the rest of the day and we were all aware of what shots needed to be filmed in what location.

On set I worked closely alongside the camera team to make sure the positioning of my boom mic was correct.  Professionalism was maintained throughout the shoots because we were aware of the people around us and the area that we were filming and we insured to recce each location and have a model release form.

I have learned about how the crew all count on each other on a shoot to make the production successful. The main pressures when working on a film shoot is setting up the kit as it took a while to set up for certain shots and there were a few issues with the kit which we needed to sort out. I thought that during the shoots, my group worked effectively with me to complete the filming and make sure we were able to tell an interesting story. I felt confident while filming with my group because we all maintained a professional attitude.

Alfie this is a good exploration of your learning through the production process and its great to hear how yout understanding of working in film has developed. You did a fantastic job as part of the sound team and in your role creating the soundtrack. I really like the original music you’ve made and it contributes to the mood of the film brilliantly. This diary is excellent evidence towards learning outcomes 1 to 4. Great work.
