PRODUCTION DIARY

 ❤︎  DARCY’S PRODUCTION DIARY  🙂  🙂  🙂

My role in pre-production was working on the sound team, I had to prepare for the shoot days by planning how we would record interviews/wild sound while also learning how to work sound kit and handle the equipment.

I feel as a team we were very ready for the shoot as we had completed various pre-production materials such as risk assessments and location recces, this meant when we got to location we were prepared to film and we could use the shot list we had written to guide our direction and stick to a timescale.

My role on shoot was working with the sound elements of filming, this meant I handled a boom mic, zoom mixer and radio mics. I also had to mic contributors, make sure the boom mic was not in shot and check the sound levels.

On the first day of the shoot we began outside the 16 to 25 independent people building where we met with our contributor Tyler, we then filmed some cut aways around the area before filming areas inside the building itself. The group then walked to castle park where we filmed Tyler’s spoken word and more cut aways, we then walked back to 16 to 25 ip while filming shots of Tyler on the way and set up to interview two of the women who worked there.

On the second day of the shoot we began at Watershed where we got a taxi to Easton, we filmed many shots of Tyler walking out of/into various tunnels before walking to his new flat where we filmed a short tour, interview and another of his spoken word, we also got some cut aways of the flat itself.

I worked closely with Jake who was the other person on our sound team, we took turns in handling the boom mic and zoom mixer. I also worked with the camera team and director and communicated when the sound was recording and making sure the boom mic wasn’t in the shot.

Professionalism was maintained on the set by everyone taking responsibility in their roles and having the group stick to schedule and shot lists, we also kept calm and focused on our tasks to effectively get on with our filming.

I learnt that communication between people in different roles was really important as to make a shoot day work well and also that being able to adapt to different situations (e.g rain complicating a planned shooting location) is an important skill to have.

The crew worked well together as our communication was good and we managed to explain to each other our ideas in a positive and supportive environment.

Some of the pressures of working on a film shoot include sticking to time schedules and adapting to unpredicted circumstances.

The only real challenge we faced on the shoot was when it began to rain while we were attempting to film in an outdoor location, we overcame this by quickly protecting the equipment and moving to the next location as not to waste any shooting time.

I felt I worked as part of the team well as I managed to effectively work in my role and communication what I was doing with my team, I also helped in carrying equipment and setting up other kit.

I improved my skills by being able to understand other elements of the sound kit that I previously wasn’t too familiar with and use them well.

Overall I felt the shoot went well as we stuck to our shoot schedule, got all our planned shots and completed all needed interviews in full. As a team we managed to communicate well and work productively in our individual roles so that we could come together to professionally create our desired shots. We managed to adapt to different circumstances and use our combined skills to operate appropriately.
