Production Diary

Production diary content

My role in production was costume and make up.  Initially I worked with the rest of the production design team to put together mood boards for colours and costume ideas based on the retro future 80s style look of the film. I organised all the characters costumes, checked who had what to bring in, what we needed, got everyone’s sizes and then made sure everyone had labelled costumes on the rack ready for shoot.  I also researched make up ideas and put together the make up that we needed.

We were well prepared for shoot. I had only done the make up once before so that was less well prepared. We rehearsed a lot and everyone knew their roles.

On shoot I did costume and make up and also acted in the advert scene as AD GIRL.

Everyone worked really hard on set. The crew was mature and organised and we worked really well together on set – everyone looked out for one another and made sure that everyone was OK. I learnt that before you start filming a take you have to make sure that everyone is set and ready to go.  The 1st AD Issy had to check with the camera and sound and call for a take, then she would call ‘roll sound’, roll camera and the camera assistant would mark the take. This was for every take so that in the edit you can find the takes you need to use.

The pressures of working on a film shoot are that you have to follow a tight schedule and deal with delays. I was quite stressed about the make up for the party scene but people from other teams helped out.

This was the first scene on the first day and we had to get 9 people through hair, costume and make up.

On the second day I got the two main characters into costume and make up for the flat scene and then worked with Andrea to get ourselves into costume and make up and into character for the ad scene. We did the ad scene green screen. It was high pressure acting on set because so many people are there watching. I dealt with it by trying to focus on my role and working with Andrea and the director, Jachur.

Overall the shoot went really well. We worked hard but it was also really good fun.

    Hi Sophia,
This is a great record of your work in production and how your crew worked together and your practical learning of the film making process. This is excellent evidence towards learning outcomes 1,2 and 3. You have now ACHIEVED all learning outcomes to a good standard. Well done!
