2.3 Potential progression routes into the film industry and wider sector

Ways to get into the industry

Personal Progression Plan

What areas/ specialisms in creative media would you like to work in?

I’d really like to focus on idea screenwriting, storyboarding, and cinematography when/if I enter the industry. I am also very interested in directing, especially after this course and I think it would be interesting to try out working in an arts or prop department.

Would you like to further study film / creative media?

Yes.

What courses interest you? Give reasons

I’d like to progress into a journalism and creative writing course at a university level because of my love of writing and I think these would be good steps in me eventually writing screenplays. I think that journalism is really interesting and I enjoy working around other people and I think it could also be a good way to travel with my work. One other option I’d like would be to somehow progress to the NFTS when I get to the right age.

Which local media companies would you be interested in working with? Give reasons

I think Bottleyard studios or Films@59 could be really good options for me to work with. I like the quick turnover of a TV set and I think the pre-production aspects of films@59 could work really well with my skills as a writer and I also have quite a big interest in the editing process which I think could be refined at films@59.

What are the options for making your own content?

I enjoy making short films and music videos as well as short animations.

What would you make and how?

I could easily make lots of animations as I have the software that I use for it (illustrator and after effects) and I also have a really nice graphics tablet that I often use when making short animations and also edits. I like the idea of trying to make a music video filming it purely on my phone so I think that could definitely be an option but I don’t currently have my own camera and I rely on the equipment that I hire from my college.

What are the options for funding and distribution?

I normally upload my work to my Youtube page and with social media it’s very easy to bring attention to new projects when they’re in the making or coming out. I don’t have many options for funding except money out of my own pocket but everything I’ve made so far has needed little to no budget.

What are your next steps?

My next steps are to finish my college course and possibly go to university or try and find a way directly into the industry and work my way up to the top.

Well done for adding your personal progression plan. I think you should consider applying for one of the BFI residential academies later this year. You could look at the animation course and also screening writing at NFTS and Tyneside. I’ll share info on the Facebook group when applications open.
