2.2 Describe a range of key job roles and responsibilities in the film industry

 

Director

The director Is a very important role and they are responsible for assembling different roles together to create a film. The director is at the center of a production meaning they have the most control over how the film will look. Directors have a knowledge of all aspects of the crew and communicate with them in order to realize their vision of the film. They don’t have full control of the film and often the producer limits their scope because of things such as the budget.

 

Assistant Directors

Assistant directors are a very important role as they are the link between the director and the rest of the crew.  There can be more than one assistant director and they would be called “1st Ad, 2nd AD” and so on.

 

Producer

Similar to the director a producer works with many other people such as screenwriter, production team and the cast. They have a very import job because they help make, they let the director know if the team can make his image come true and how they would have to do it. Their roles start in pre-production in this stage they plan out things like Risk assessment, Location rekey, Casting arrangement, Budget plan and many more. some of the producer’s jobs may be shared out with other people such as the co-producer.

 

Cinematographer/DOP

Cinematographers are also referred to as DPs (Directors of Photography) They are responsible for how the film is going to look. They have control over the camera and lighting department and work closely with the director and help bring their vision to life.  The DOP will help out on set by setting up the camera and lighting. They also help out in post working with editors on colour grading and making the film look as the director envisioned.

 

Production designer

The production designer is usually the first to translate the script into a visual format, usually by creating a storyboard. Production designers often work with the art director and director to further develop the script into a film.

 

Editor

Editors are responsible for putting the film together. They work with the director and DOP to putting together the footage and making sure the film is how the director imagined. The DOP works with the Editor during colour corrections making sure everything fits with the tone of the film.
